Jan 2: Our first road trip of the year is to tour around the UK. We started off by visiting Cliveden House, a lovely mansion, about 45 minutes from London. Afterwards we went for a two michelin stars gastropub lunch in Marlow at Tom Kerridge’s Hand and Flowers. Its the only pub with two stars in the UK.
Next stop is Oxford. We spent about an hour strolling around the historic buildings and colorful street. We like Oxford – there’s a charm to it. Our final stop of the day is at Bibury in Cotswolds. It was totally too dark to enjoy the cute row houses and town. So we proceed to our hotel – Wyck Hill House – which was about 25 minutes north of Bibury. The hotel is clean, homey, and the room is spacious. Food at the hotel is ok.
Jan 3: 9am we started driving up through Cotswold to Stratford upon avon. We spent an hour there visiting Shakespeare’s birthplace and strolling through the streets. The town was 2.5 hours drive to our one michelin star lunch stop at Fischer’s baslow hall which is in the middle of peak district national park. Afterwards we then did another 1.5 hour drive to Manchester to takenphoto at Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium.
Unfortunately, we didn’t book the tour in advanced and tickets were sold out. Hence, our early checkin (than planned) to the Best Western Mytton Fold in Langho. It gave us about an hour to spare before our one michelin star dinner at Northcote restaurant which was a three minutes drive away from the hotel. Today was an easy day basically just to get us as close to Lake district as possible.
Jan 4: Three days into our trip and its finally the day we’ve been waiting for. We rise and shine super early and departed the hotel at 8am in orser to spend the day in the lake district. We had the chance to drive pass and/or visited 11 lakes today. The drive was stunning as well with the pastel sky color lasting all day. We watched the sunset from a pier at Miller ground and went souvenir shopping at The World of Beatrix Potter afterwards.
For lunch, we had italian food in Keswick at Casa Bell. Dinner was at a one michelin star restaurant in Ambleside called Samling. We opted to stay in a homey guesthouse – Kirkwood – for the night to experience the English countryside home.
Jan 5: Another early start for us on day 4 of our UK road trip. We had to wake up at 7am in order to hike up Orrest Head in time for sunrise at 8.30am. It was a very close call since we didn’t know where to park. We got to the view point just minutes before the sunrise.
The rest of the day we spent on the road traveling back down to Cambridge by skirting Yorkshire dale. About an hour and a half away from the Lakes we stopped at Skipton Castle. Its a cute castle, unfortunately, we didn’t have time to explore the forest grounds. Next stop was in Leeds for lunch at My Thai restaurant since some of us needed spicy food. From Leeds its almost a three hours drive to Cambridge.
In Cambridge, we stayed at the Holiday Inn Express near the airport. Dinner was at Alimentum – a one michelin starred restaurant – near the train station.
Jan 6: Gloomy, drizzling friday. We spend 10am-2.30pm strolling the streets of Cambridge and visiting colleges. Its a lovely place and reminded of scenes from so many movies. The one that comes to mind immediately is about Ramanujan. Don’t remember the name but it came out last year. The Fitzwilliam museum is a must visit. I’m not sure what I like more here – the artworks or the interior designs, especially, of the roof dome. Afterwarsds, we had lunch at Fitzbillies which have been open since 1921. Our time in Cambridge ended when the rain started pouring.
The drive back to London was just 1.5 hours and it gave us sufficient time to unload our bags at both homes. Well well…thats the end of our first road trip of 2017. It was a quick one. Next up is Spain in March!
